As women living in todays patriarchal society have forgotten how to roar. We have had our roar suppressed for centuries we have been taught to be quiet and subservient, of course in some cultures much more so than others. Women must learn to Roar like a Goddess once more.
The Hindi Goddess Durga is the Goddess of strength and protection. She is the divine Shakti from whom all other Goddesses are birthed from. She rides astride a lion with 8 arms. holding various weapons. Where is your Durga? Can you feel or sense her? We all have this feminine energy and we also have masculine energy so its like finding the yin and yang within – the balance between the feminine and masculine.
The male energy cannot exist without the female energy, Shiva cannot exist without Shakti, purusha cannot exist without Prakritti, inaction cannot exist without action, there needs to be balance.
At one time our female ancestors were respected for their powers of intuition, herbal healing, child rearing and creativity they were the mothers who walked upon the Divine Mother Earth. The Earth was respected for her creativity in birthing nature. People understood for nature to keep flowing rhythmically and rebirthing itself the Mother must be respected for our own survival. That respect is gone as the patriarchal society we have nowadays tramples all over the Mother earth in pursuit of wealth, greed, violence, and power. There is no compassion for the children of this earth who will inherit it’s destruction.
Today there is much male violence against women in Domestic situations. We are watching for example the young women in Iran finding their inner Goddess Durga. They are fearless in pursuit of freedom, they have been trampled and suppressed for so long . Even in the event of being killed or imprisoned and tortured they Roar like a Goddess. They are not scared any longer.
You have lost your self respect. Being told ‘you are not good enough’ all your life can do that. However if you don’t respect yourself then you are doing your inner Goddess Durga an injustice as you are not respecting your Divine Feminine Energy.
When you reclaim your Divine Feminine Energy it empowers you to take action to be respected otherwise you are allowing others to disrespect your inner Goddess and divine Shakti. Self respect empowers you to speak your truth and Roar like a Goddess. You don’t need a man to complete you because you are already complete. Then you may meet someone if that is your wish, to have a partnership with who respects your independence, strength and courage and isn’t afraid of it or feel a need to suppress it so he may be the dominate you.
This is the most wonderful gift that Yoga has given me. I felt empowered at my first Yoga class. I didn’t know about the Goddesses then or the Feminine energy power that lives within me. The whole left side of your body is your feminine side and the whole right side is the masculine side. Which is your stronger side? Where are your weaknesses or old injuries or current illnesses?
Women generally do not support each other, they vie against each other, judge and envy each other. We can feel threatened by each other. We fear being the outsider and want only to be liked and needed by our sisters at any expense.
Durga carries in her 8 limbs some weapons: a spear, trident, discus, sword and axe these are not for slaying people but slaying the negative conditioning, the thoughts and ego. She rides a lion or tiger and carries prayer beads and holy water, a conch shell, a bow and 2 quivers full of arrows, a diamond thunderbolt and bell, a noose and lotus flower, garlands of flowers, gems and a drinking cup always full of celestial liquor. All these were gifted to her by the Gods in respect of her.
It’s taken me many years to realise my inner Durga. How sad it is that our culture doesn’t embrace a strong feminine energy that can empower young women and at the same time teach men also to embrace their feminine energy be it in the human race, in Nature or Mother Earth herself. Mother Earth will survive this horrendous assault but man or male energy will not because he is incomplete without the feminine, he cannot survive without her. There will be no seed, no birthing, no creativity without her.
Roar like a Goddess. By chanting this mantra you can embrace your Divine Feminine Energy Om Dum Durgayai Namaha,. Here is a link with lyrics and meaning to the beautiful mantra: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdRQBvclWuo
